Profile
Robert E Miller FAIA pioneered Bohlin Cywinski Jackson’s Seattle office over 30 years ago. His lifelong interests in social issues, alternative construction, renewable energy, and industrial design are reflected in his holistic approach to architecture, ranging broadly in scale from modest cabins to the firm’s first high-rise towers. He believes strongly that thoughtful innovation and integration are the future of successful sustainable design. He is determined that ample budgets do not exempt a project from optimizing the use of resources, nor do modest budgets relieve one of the responsibility for excellence in architecture and sustainability. Robert leads design on projects that are local, national and international, including collaborations across the practice. Robert’s inventive and carefully crafted body of work includes the Pacific Rim Estate, Gosline Residence, Ballard Library, SOMA Towers, Uniqlo Shanghai, Lightbox, and Tsing Tao Pearl Visitor Center and he has teamed collaboratively with partner firms such as AMD Architects on the Marquez Hall and the CoorsTek Center at Colorado School of Mines. His inventive solutions include innovative construction systems, furniture, hardware as well as public art. His work has been recognized with over 150 national and international awards and has been widely published. Robert routinely shares his expertise through lectures, university reviews and serving on design award juries nationally and internationally. Robert embodies an unusual combination of intellectual and visceral fascinations with place, people, and details. He credits his intense curiosity for his ability to consistently find unique opportunities and a seemingly inevitable balance between the manmade and the natural for each project’s circumstance.
